WOMEN’S HEALTH • HORMONES • MAY AWARENESS
Are Your Hormones Trying to Tell You Something?
Let me guess — you’ve been feeling “off” for a while. Maybe you’re exhausted no matter how much you sleep. Maybe the weight crept on even though nothing changed. Or maybe you just feel like a foggy, irritable version of yourself and you can’t explain why.
Here’s what I want you to know: you are not making it up. And you are not alone. As an endocrinologist, I hear these stories every single day — from women in their 20s, 30s, 40s, and beyond. So often, there is a hormonal explanation that nobody has taken the time to look for.
Your Body Is Sending Signals — Are You Listening?
Hormones are your body’s chemical messengers. They regulate your energy, metabolism, mood, sleep, and reproductive health. When they’re in balance, life feels manageable. When they’re not, even simple things can feel hard. And the tricky part? Hormonal symptoms are easy to dismiss — by others, and sometimes by ourselves. We chalk it up to stress, aging, or just being busy. But persistent symptoms deserve a real answer.
Common Hormonal Conditions in Women
Three conditions I see frequently — and that are often overlooked:
Thyroid Disorders — Can cause persistent fatigue, weight changes, brain fog, hair thinning, and mood shifts. Often missed because symptoms overlap with everyday stress.
PCOS — One of the most common — and under-diagnosed — hormonal conditions in women of reproductive age. Signs include irregular periods, acne, weight struggles, and excess hair growth.
Perimenopause — The transition to menopause can begin years earlier than most women expect, bringing hot flashes, disrupted sleep, mood changes, and brain fog. Many women don’t realize what’s happening until someone connects the dots.
Symptoms Worth Paying Attention To
If any of these sound familiar, it may be time to dig deeper:
Fatigue that doesn’t improve with rest
Unexplained weight changes
Mood swings, anxiety, or low mood
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
Irregular periods or cycle changes
Sleep problems
Hot flashes or night sweats
Hair thinning or skin changes
A general feeling that something is “just off”
You don’t need a long list of symptoms to seek answers. If something feels wrong, that’s reason enough.
A Note from Dr. Abby
Women have spent too long being told their symptoms are “just stress.” You deserve to be heard, evaluated, and supported — not dismissed. Your symptoms are valid. Your health matters. And getting answers is always worth it.
